Customer case: Environmentally friendly VA solutions from Kombi Ringen
For 50 years Kombi Ringen has delivered land and water supply products to municipalities and construction companies in Sweden and Scandinavia. Kombi Ringen traditionally challenges heavy products with high-quality and recyclable plastic products for a better working environment and for a reduced risk of strain and crush injuries.
Kombi Ringen manufactures products mainly in Sweden from recycled plastic materials with large environmental benefits and low CO2 emissions as a result. An example is their floor drain water trap for the concrete industry, which is manufactured by Mälarplast.
The floor drain water trap was previously produced from virgin high-density polyethylene, HDPE, a material that most thermoplastics are recyclable. Together with Mälarplast, they looked at various possibilities to make the product even more sustainable and they decided to switch to 100% recycled HDPE. The change of material means that Kombi Ringen makes a carbon dioxide saving of 23.4 tonnes - every year. A decrease corresponding to 98.7%.
The large environmental savings are due to several factors. Mälarplast energy-efficient production and short transport distances in combination with the choice of material have a major impact on the products' climate impact. Had the input water trap, for example, been manufactured from recycled HDPE in China, the product would have caused emissions of more than 1.6 tonnes of CO2, compared with the 304 kg of CO2 that Mälarplast production gives rise to.
