Circular solutions
Regenerated and bio-based plastics have an important role to play in the transition towards a more sustainable society, as does the circular flow of recycled plastic.
At Mälarplast we are happy to use regenerated (recycled) materials and different types of bioplastics where possible. Choosing the right materials to suit product requirements, budgetary considerations and the environment is part of our unique service to customers.
These days there is a large range of bio-based plastics that could replace up to 80% of all applications. Instead of oil, the raw materials come from corn, cellulose or sugar cane. There are also biodegradable qualities that can be used for things such as composting or in digestion processes for biogas.
The change from petroleum-based plastics to renewable, regenerated or compostable materials could be the simplest way to alleviate the environmental impact of a product. These materials can reduce the amount of non-renewable raw materials being used as well as improving the physical and aesthetic properties of a product.
In 2017, Mälarplast was involved in a project with the Municipality of Eskilstuna, Sweden, to investigate which plastic products in Eskilstuna would be suitable for recycling in line with the circular economy model. The project resulted in a new, innovative model for recycling – the Green Loop System. The Green Loop System means that products for commercial kitchens and catering are subscribed to or rented out to businesses before then being returned to the factory for recycling in an in-house closed system.
Since 2017, we have developed our business and our range of sustainable materials and recycling, and the Green Loop System is just one example of several circular solutions that are part of our current customer offer. Studies show that plastic can be the most environmentally friendly alternative if it is recycled and our aim is to help more customers convert to using circular solutions.
